Lake Tahoe under fresh snow
In short

Tahoe winter runs late November to April. For 2026-27, Heavenly, Northstar and Mt. Rose target Nov. 20, Palisades Nov. 25, Diamond Peak Dec. 3. Plus chains and parking.

Winter at Lake Tahoe runs roughly from late November to April. For the 2026-27 season, Heavenly, Northstar and Mt. Rose target November 20, Palisades Tahoe November 25 and Diamond Peak December 3, all weather permitting. January is the snowiest month at lake level. If you don't ski, there is still plenty to do: snowshoeing at Tahoe Meadows, skating in Tahoe City or at Northstar, sledding in Tahoe Vista, and Sand Harbor with almost nobody on it. The two things that trip visitors up are chain controls and winter street-parking bans. Both are covered below.

We manage 41 vacation homes on the North and West Shore, from Incline Village to Tahoma, so this guide is written from that side of the lake. We keep South Lake Tahoe short.

When does winter start at Lake Tahoe?

The first snow usually falls in November, but it is often light and melts off at lake level. Real winter sets in during December. The Western Regional Climate Center's long-term record for Tahoe City gives a clear picture of what the lake shore gets:

MonthAvg high / low (°F)Avg snowfall (in.)Avg snow depth (in.)
November46.9 / 25.815.5—
December40.3 / 20.835.2—
January38.6 / 19.145.922
February40.3 / 19.936.529
March44.0 / 22.835.227
April50.4 / 26.915.913

Those are lake-level numbers, at about 6,200 feet. The resorts sit higher and closer to the Sierra crest, and they get far more snow than the town below. The west and north sides of the basin also tend to get more than the east shore, which is why two resorts can report very different totals after the same storm.

Snow years vary a lot. Some winters start big in November. Others don't get going until after New Year's. If snow matters most to your trip, January through March is the safest window.

North Shore: Diamond Peak and Mt. Rose

Diamond Peak is Incline Village's own ski area: 655 acres, 1,840 vertical feet, and lake views from almost every run. It is smaller and quieter than the big resorts, and general parking is free. Mt. Rose, up the Mt. Rose Highway, has the highest base elevation at Tahoe (8,260 feet), which helps early and late in the season. Our Diamond Peak guide for renters and Mt. Rose vs. Diamond Peak comparison go into lessons, parking and which suits your group.

Northstar and Palisades Tahoe

Northstar is the easy drive from Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista and Carnelian Bay, up Highway 267. Palisades Tahoe, the 1960 Winter Olympics site, is a short drive from Tahoe City and the West Shore and has the bigger, steeper terrain. Our Alpine Meadows guide covers the Alpine side of Palisades. Both are on multi-resort passes (Northstar on Epic, Palisades on Ikon), so check which pass your group holds before choosing a base.

Homewood

Homewood sits right above the lake on the West Shore. The resort is selling 2026-27 season passes and says it is breaking ground on a new eight-passenger gondola in 2026 to replace the Madden triple chair. It had not posted an opening day at the end of September, so check before you plan around it. We have three homes in Homewood and two in nearby Tahoma.

Heavenly and the South Shore

Heavenly straddles the state line above South Lake Tahoe. From the North Shore it is a long winter drive around the lake, so we only suggest it if you are staying on that side. Our North vs. South Lake Tahoe guide lays out the trade-offs.

None of our homes are ski-in/ski-out. What you get instead is a whole house with room to dry gear, a kitchen for early breakfasts and, at some homes, a hot tub. Our ski cabin rentals page lists the homes that work best for a ski week.

Winter activities that aren't skiing

Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing

  • Tahoe Meadows, just west of Mt. Rose Summit and under 20 minutes from Incline Village. It is free. The Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Trail is a loop of about 1.3 miles and a good first outing. Chickadee Ridge is nearby; please watch the birds rather than feed them.
  • Tahoe XC, about 2 miles from Tahoe City off Highway 28. A nonprofit Nordic center with more than 50 km of groomed trails, rentals for classic and skate skis and snowshoes, and a section of dog-friendly trail.
  • Sugar Pine Point State Park, on the West Shore next to Tahoma. More than 20 km of marked cross-country trails in the area used for the 1960 Olympic Nordic events, a heated restroom, and ranger talks most winter weekends from January to March. A parking fee applies year-round.

Sledding

North Tahoe Regional Park in Tahoe Vista has three sled hills, from a gentle meadow for toddlers to a longer, faster slope with lake views, plus groomed trails when conditions allow. There is a small fee; check the North Tahoe PUD for current rates and whether the hills are open.

The Tahoe City Winter Sports Park has a small sled hill for kids 10 and under, with discs provided (no outside sleds). Tahoe Donner Snowplay near Truckee has lift-free tubing lanes and sledding by reservation; last season it opened December 28 and often sold out over the holidays, so book online up to seven days ahead.

One rule people don't expect: you can't sled at Diamond Peak. The resort bans tubing and sledding anywhere on its property. Our Incline Village in winter guide lists where to go instead.

Ice skating

  • Tahoe City Winter Sports Park, 251 N. Lake Blvd.: an ice rink, sled hill, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, booked in 1.5-hour blocks. Reservations are recommended; walk-ups are limited. The park plans to reopen in November 2026.
  • Northstar Village rink: skating is free, and you pay only for rentals, according to Visit Truckee-Tahoe. It is surrounded by fire pits and restaurants, which makes it an easy evening out.
  • Truckee Ice Rink at Truckee River Regional Park, and the Heavenly Village rink in South Lake Tahoe if you are over that way.

Snowmobiling

Guided snowmobile tours run around the basin in winter. Book ahead for holiday weeks, and ask the outfitter about age limits, driver's license rules and what clothing is provided.

Hot springs

After a cold day outside, a soak is the classic way to end it. Our hot springs near Lake Tahoe guide compares the soaks within a drive of the North Shore, with fees and drive times.

Where to see the lake in snow

Turquoise water and granite boulders at Sand Harbor

Sand Harbor

Sand Harbor is the easiest winter win on the North Shore. Nevada State Parks keeps it open year-round; as of 2026 entry is $10 for Nevada vehicles and $15 for others, and no reservation is needed outside May 15 to September 30. Go on a still morning after a storm, when the granite is covered in snow and the water is flat. Pets are allowed October 15 to April 15 on a leash of six feet or less.

The East Shore Trail

The paved East Shore Trail from Incline Village to Sand Harbor is lovely in snow, but the path itself is not reliably cleared. Wear boots with good grip or traction devices.

Emerald Bay

Emerald Bay under snow is one of the best views at Tahoe, but getting there is not guaranteed. Caltrans regularly closes Highway 89 around Emerald Bay after big storms because of avalanche risk, sometimes for days. From the West Shore, check QuickMap before you set out. If it's closed, Sugar Pine Point and the Homewood lakeshore are good alternatives. More in our Emerald Bay guide.

Donner Lake

Donner Memorial State Park, just west of Truckee, has snowy views over Donner Lake and a visitor center on the emigrant history of the pass. It pairs well with a morning at Tahoe Donner or a stop in Truckee on the drive in.

Where to eat on the North and West Shore

These places were open as of 2026. Winter hours can be shorter, so check before you go.

  • Fire Sign Cafe, 1785 W. Lake Blvd., Tahoe City (West Shore): a breakfast and lunch favorite since 1978. Expect a wait on weekends.
  • The Old Post Office Cafe, 5245 N. Lake Blvd., Carnelian Bay: a family-run breakfast spot, open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • River Grill, 55 W. Lake Blvd., Tahoe City: dinner on the Truckee River next to Fanny Bridge.
  • Gar Woods Grill & Pier, 5000 N. Lake Blvd., Carnelian Bay: lakefront, and a classic après stop on the way back from Northstar.

For more morning options, see breakfast places in Tahoe City. On the West Shore, our Tahoma restaurants list covers what's near Homewood and Tahoma.

Winter driving and parking

California chain controls

Caltrans uses three levels:

  • R-1: chains required except on passenger vehicles and light trucks under 6,000 lbs with snow tires on at least two drive wheels.
  • R-2: chains required except on 4WD or AWD vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels.
  • R-3: chains required on all vehicles, no exceptions.

Caltrans also says 4WD and AWD vehicles must carry chains in chain-control areas, even when they are exempt. AWD on all-season tires is not enough under R-2. Many rental cars come on all-season tires, so ask what's on the car before you leave the airport.

Nevada

On the Mt. Rose Highway, Kingsbury Grade and US-50, chains are required under chain controls unless the vehicle is 4WD or AWD with snow tires. If you are flying into Reno, the Mt. Rose Highway crosses a summit at 8,911 feet and can be much worse than Reno or the lake. Check nvroads.com or dial 511.

Street parking bans

  • Placer County (Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista, Carnelian Bay, Tahoe City, the West Shore): no parking on county-maintained roads east of Emigrant Gap from November 1 through April 30, so plows can work. Fines are $150, then $250, then $450, and cars may be towed.
  • Washoe County (Incline Village and Crystal Bay): red and green parking days from October 1. Street parking is illegal on red days.

At a rental, park in the driveway and keep cars out of the plow's path. Several of our Incline homes have steep driveways, and each home page says when you'll want 4WD.

Skip the car

Placer County's TART buses are free to ride, and in November 2025 the county extended fare-free service through December 2027. TART Connect, the on-demand shuttle, covers Tahoe City, the West Shore, Kings Beach and nearby towns, with evening service to Olympic Valley and Northstar. That helps on powder days, when resort lots fill early.

December vs. January vs. February vs. March

December

The season is just starting and early snow can be thin. The Christmas to New Year's week is the busiest and most expensive of the winter, and the best homes book out months ahead.

January

The snowiest month at lake level. After the first week, crowds drop and rates ease. Mid to late January is often the best mix of snow and space.

February

Deep snowpack and longer days. Presidents' Day weekend brings a sharp spike in visitors; the weeks around it are much calmer.

March

Still snowy on average, with more sunny spring days between storms. Good for families on spring break who want both snow and time outside without frozen fingers.

Where to stay for a winter trip

In winter, the base you pick decides how much time you spend on snowy roads. Match the town to what you'll do most:

  • Incline Village (20 of our homes): minutes from Diamond Peak, up the hill to Mt. Rose and Tahoe Meadows, and close to Sand Harbor.
  • Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista and Carnelian Bay: the short route to Northstar on Highway 267, and close to North Tahoe Regional Park's sled hills.
  • Tahoe City: the Winter Sports Park, Tahoe XC and the quickest drive to Palisades.
  • Homewood and Tahoma: Homewood Mountain on your doorstep, Sugar Pine Point's trails next door, and a quieter West Shore winter.

A hot tub under falling snow is the most requested winter feature. Browse homes with a hot tub or homes with a fireplace, then read our hot tub etiquette before you soak. For a bigger group, see homes for large groups.

Book on our own site rather than an app. Our nightly prices on Airbnb are set 28% higher than on our site, and 17% higher on Vrbo, and every home page shows the dollar saving for your dates. More on that in booking direct vs. Airbnb. You can search winter dates here.

What to pack

  • Waterproof boots with real traction. Driveways, lots and trails ice over fast after a storm.
  • Layers. A January day can start near 19°F and reach the high 30s by afternoon.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen. Sun off fresh snow at 6,000-plus feet burns quickly.
  • Hat, insulated gloves and spare socks for every person.
  • For drivers: chains that fit your tires, an ice scraper, a small shovel, a blanket, a flashlight and snacks.
  • Your own sled if you plan to sled outside a snowplay area. Don't assume the house has one.

A family-friendly winter weekend

Day 1: Arrive before dark to avoid driving a pass at night. Groceries, fire on, hot tub.

Day 2: Morning lesson at Diamond Peak or Northstar for the kids. Afternoon skate at the Northstar Village rink, where skating is free.

Day 3: Snowshoe the Tahoe Meadows loop or rent gear at Tahoe XC, then sled at North Tahoe Regional Park. Dinner in Tahoe City.

Day 4: Walk Sand Harbor in the snow before you leave, and check road conditions before you pick a route home.

A romantic winter getaway at Lake Tahoe

For a couple, winter at Tahoe is about quiet more than a packed schedule. Skip the Christmas to New Year's week, the busiest and most expensive of the season, and look at midweek dates in January or March instead. A simple plan for two: snowshoe at Tahoe Meadows or Sugar Pine Point in the morning, walk a nearly empty Sand Harbor in the afternoon, and end the day by a fire or in a hot tub with snow coming down. Pick a smaller home with a fireplace or a hot tub, close to the restaurants in Incline Village or Tahoe City so the evening drive is short. The chain and parking rules above apply to a weekend for two as much as to a ski trip.

Plan your 2026-27 Tahoe winter

The holidays and Presidents' Day week book first, and so do the homes with hot tubs and flexible sleeping for bigger groups. If your dates are set, browse our North Shore homes and book direct for the lower price. If you're not sure which town suits your plans, call us at (530) 317-0291 or send us a note. We live here year-round and can tell you which side of the lake makes sense for your week. For the full seasonal picture, see the best time to visit Lake Tahoe.

Questions

When do the Lake Tahoe ski resorts open for 2026-27?

Announced targets, all weather permitting: Heavenly, Northstar and Mt. Rose on November 20, 2026; Palisades Tahoe on November 25; Boreal on November 27; Diamond Peak on December 3; Kirkwood on December 4. Homewood plans to operate but had not posted a date as of late September 2026. Check each resort's site before you book lessons or rentals.

When does it snow in Lake Tahoe?

At lake level in Tahoe City, the long-term records of the Western Regional Climate Center show snow mostly from November through April, with January the snowiest month at about 46 inches on average and roughly 190 inches a year. The resorts on the Sierra crest get considerably more than the lake shore.

Do you need chains to drive to Lake Tahoe in winter?

When chain controls are up, yes, unless your vehicle qualifies for an exemption. In California, R-2 controls exempt only 4WD or AWD vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels, and Caltrans says those vehicles must still carry chains in chain-control areas. In Nevada's Tahoe area, chains are required under controls unless the vehicle is 4WD or AWD with snow tires. Check quickmap.dot.ca.gov or nvroads.com before you leave.

Can I park on the street in North Lake Tahoe in winter?

Mostly no. Placer County bans parking on county-maintained roads east of Emigrant Gap, which includes Kings Beach, Tahoe City and the West Shore, from November 1 through April 30, with fines from $150. Washoe County runs red and green parking days in Incline Village and Crystal Bay from October 1. Park in the driveway or a public lot.

Is Lake Tahoe worth visiting in winter without skiing?

Yes. You can snowshoe or cross-country ski at Tahoe Meadows, Tahoe XC or Sugar Pine Point State Park, skate at the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park or the free Northstar Village rink, sled at North Tahoe Regional Park, and walk a nearly empty Sand Harbor after a storm.

Does Lake Tahoe freeze in winter?

No. The lake is 1,645 feet deep and holds too much heat to freeze over. Shallow edges and parts of Emerald Bay have iced in unusually cold spells, but the main lake stays open all winter.

Is the bus free in North Lake Tahoe?

Yes. Placer County's TART buses are free to ride, and in November 2025 the county extended fare-free service through December 2027. TART Connect, the on-demand shuttle, is also free in most of its California zones.

Is Lake Tahoe good for a romantic winter getaway?

Yes, especially midweek in January or March, away from the busy Christmas to New Year's week. Snowshoe at Tahoe Meadows or Sugar Pine Point, walk a quiet Sand Harbor after a storm, and stay in a smaller home with a fireplace or hot tub near Incline Village or Tahoe City so evenings don't involve a long snowy drive.

What is Lake Tahoe like in December?

It is the start of the season. Most resorts aim to open between late November and early December, early snow can be thin, and the Christmas to New Year's week is the busiest and most expensive of the winter, with the best homes booked months ahead. Expect chain controls on mountain passes after storms.
